Back to school with a fully loaded briefcase

She stood surveying the kitchen table, biting her lip.
Shabby pencil cases from the year before. Too few scissors. Stubby crayons. Someone was moping about using last year’s backpack again. She caught sight of the calendar. Two more days to school. The school supplies list sat folded in her purse, untouched. But she, and her credit cards, were maxed out from uniform, clothes, and shoes shopping. Another new year on her own. So much to do. And no one to fall back on. The burden and the bill were on her. Then, the bell rang. It was a malach at the door, with briefcases bursting with shiny, new school supplies, personalized for each child. That malach was Project Yedid, showing up at the doors of hundreds of children who've lost a parent. We gave them the excitement of a fresh start and crossed one big, expensive item off their parent’s long to-do list. Relief. |
